Alternatives to iwant
The best alternatives to iwant are direct vLLM or SGLang on hardware you control, Ollama or llama.cpp for local weights, TGI for existing Hugging Face serving fleets, and LocalAI when one OpenAI-compatible URL must cover multiple backends. Keep iwant when a documented model slug on GCP should become an API endpoint without hand-assembling infrastructure and engine flags.
Right-size before you add ops work: Local inference and the self-hosting cost model. Switch away from iwant when you need another cloud, custom parallelism, or engine settings the recipes do not expose.
Quick comparison
| Alternative | Best for | What you own instead of iwant |
|---|---|---|
| vLLM | Production CUDA serving on your GPU fleet | Host, install, vllm serve flags, VM lifecycle |
| SGLang | Prefix-heavy agents, structured generation | Host, parsers, parallelism, container lifecycle |
| Ollama | Local library models and IDE chat | Machine RAM, ollama pull, no cloud provisioning |
| llama.cpp | GGUF on CPU, Metal, or modest GPU | Build, quantization, llama-server lifecycle |
| TGI | Existing HF Hub deployments on Kubernetes | Clusters, supported-architecture checks, migration |
| LocalAI | One API over heterogeneous backends | Gallery YAML, backend choice, gateway ops |
Model-specific commands for both paths: self-hosting model directory. Broader runtime matrix: Text generation inference.
Launch by model name with iwant
After installation and GCP authentication:
iwant up gpt-oss-20biwant provisions the GPU host, configures serving, waits for the models API, and prints URL and key. GCP is currently supported. Billing, quota, and capacity remain your responsibility.
Configure vLLM directly
The vLLM serving guide runs on infrastructure you arrange. You choose engine version, model format, context limit, parallelism, and authentication. Example with upstream recipes: gpt-oss-20b on vLLM, Step-3.7-Flash container layout.
Stopping vllm serve does not delete a rented VM — that is separate cloud cleanup.
